2 Kings 11

»

1 And Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, and she destroyed all the royal heirs.

2 And Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of her brother, and stole him from among the king's sons that were put to death, and hid him and his nurse in the bedchamber from the face of Athaliah, and he was not slain.

3 And he remained with her, hid in the house of the Lord, [for] six years. And Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 And in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and took the captains of hundreds-of the bodyguards and the escorts- and brought them to him into the house of the Lord, and made a covenant of the Lord with them, and adjured them, and Jehoiada showed them the king's son.

5 And charged them, saying, This [is] the thing which you shall do.

6 Let a third part of you go in [on] the Sabbath day, and keep the watch of the king's house in the porch; and another third at the gate of Sur, and a third at the gate behind the footmen; and keep guard of the house.

7 And there [shall be] two parties among you, even everyone that goes out on the Sabbath, and they shall keep the guard of the Lord's house before the king.

8 And surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapon in his hand, and he that goes into the ranges shall die. And they shall be with the king in his going out and in his coming in.

9 And the captains of hundreds did all the things that the wise Jehoiada commanded; and they took each his men, both those that went in on the Sabbath day, and those that went out on the Sabbath day, and went in to Jehoiada the priest.

10 And the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the swords and spears of King David that were in the house of the Lord.

11 And the footmen stood each with his weapon in his hand from the right corner of the house to the left corner of the house, [by] the altar and the house round about the king.

12 And he brought forth the king's son, and put the crown on him and [gave him] the Testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him, and they clapped [their] hands and said, Long live the king!

13 And Athaliah heard the sound of the people running, and she went in to the people to the house of the Lord.

14 And she looked, and behold, the king stood near a pillar according to custom; and the singers and the trumpeters were before the king and all the people of the land, rejoicing and sounding with trumpets. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, Treason! Treason!

15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds who were over the army, and said to them, Take her outside under guard, [and] he that goes in after her shall certainly die by the sword. For the priest said, Let her not, however, be slain in the house of the Lord.

16 And they laid hands upon her, and went in by the way of the horses' entrance into the house of the Lord, and she was slain there.

17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, that they should be the Lord's people; also between the king and the people.

18 And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal and tore it down, and completely broke in pieces his altars and his images, and they slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed overseers over the house of the Lord.

19 And he took the captains of the hundreds, and the bodyguards and the escorts, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king out of the house of the Lord; and they went in by the way of the gate of the footmen of the king's house, and seated him there on the throne of the kings.

20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was at rest: and they slew Athaliah with the sword in the house of the king.

21 Joash [was] seven years old when he began to reign.

The Apostles’ Bible Complete (ABC)

The Apostles’ Bible Complete (ABC) is a modern translation of the Bible that strives to offer a clear and faithful rendering of the scriptures in contemporary language. This translation is designed to be accessible to a wide audience, providing an easy-to-read yet accurate version of the biblical text. The ABC translation aims to bridge the gap between the ancient languages in which the Bible was originally written and the modern vernacular, making it an ideal choice for both personal study and public reading.

One of the notable features of the Apostles’ Bible Complete is its dedication to maintaining the integrity of the original manuscripts. The translators of the ABC worked meticulously with the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts to ensure that their translation accurately reflects the original meaning and intent of the scriptures. By employing a balance of formal equivalence (word-for-word) and dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought) translation techniques, the ABC aims to preserve the nuances and richness of the original languages while ensuring readability and clarity for modern readers.

The ABC also incorporates extensive cross-references and study aids to enhance the reader’s understanding of the biblical text. These tools include footnotes that provide historical and cultural context, as well as explanations of difficult or ambiguous passages. This approach helps readers to grasp the deeper meanings of the scriptures and to see how different parts of the Bible interconnect. The inclusion of these study aids makes the ABC particularly useful for those who are new to the Bible, as well as for more experienced readers who are looking to deepen their understanding of the text.

Despite its strengths, the Apostles’ Bible Complete has faced some criticisms. Some readers feel that the translation could benefit from further refinement in certain passages, as the balance between formal and dynamic equivalence can sometimes lead to inconsistencies in style and tone. Others have noted that while the study aids are helpful, they can occasionally overwhelm the main text, making it difficult to focus on the scripture itself. Nonetheless, the ABC remains a valuable and respected translation, appreciated for its commitment to accuracy, clarity, and accessibility, and for its ability to bring the ancient words of the Bible to life for contemporary readers.
