1 Chronicles 18

»

1 And it came to pass afterwards, that David attacked the Philistines, and routed them, and took Gath and its villages out of the hand of the Philistines.

2 And he defeated Moab; and the Moabites became servants to David, [and] tributaries.

3 And David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah of Hamath, as he was going to establish power toward the River Euphrates.

4 And David took of them a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand infantry [men]. And David hamstrung all the chariot [horses], but he left a hundred chariots among them.

5 And the Syrians came from Damascus to help Hadadezer king of Zobah; and David killed of the Syrian [army] twenty-two thousand men.

6 And David put a garrison in Syria near Damascus; and they became tributary servants to David. And the Lord delivered David wherever he went.

7 And David took the golden shields that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

8 And David took very much bronze out of Tibhath and out of the chief cities of Chun; of this Solomon made the bronze sea, and the pillars, and the bronze vessels.

9 And Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole force of Hadadezer king of Zobah.

10 And he sent Hadoram his son to King David to ask how he was, and to congratulate him because he had fought against Hadadezer, and had defeated him; for Tou was the enemy of Hadadezer.

11 And all the golden and silver and bronze vessels, even these King David consecrated to the Lord, with the silver and the gold which he took from all the nations; from Edom, Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

12 And Abishai son of Zeruiah killed eighteen thousand of the Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

13 And he put garrisons in the valley; and all the Edomites became David's servants, and the Lord delivered David wherever he went.

14 So David reigned over all Israel, and he executed judgment and justice to all his people.

15 And Joab the son of Zeruiah [was] over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud [was] recorder.

16 And Zadok son of Ahitub, and Abimelech son of Abiathar [were] the priests; and Shavsha [was] the scribe;

17 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [was] over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were the chief deputies of the king.

The Apostles’ Bible Complete (ABC)

The Apostles’ Bible Complete (ABC) is a modern translation of the Bible that strives to offer a clear and faithful rendering of the scriptures in contemporary language. This translation is designed to be accessible to a wide audience, providing an easy-to-read yet accurate version of the biblical text. The ABC translation aims to bridge the gap between the ancient languages in which the Bible was originally written and the modern vernacular, making it an ideal choice for both personal study and public reading.

One of the notable features of the Apostles’ Bible Complete is its dedication to maintaining the integrity of the original manuscripts. The translators of the ABC worked meticulously with the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts to ensure that their translation accurately reflects the original meaning and intent of the scriptures. By employing a balance of formal equivalence (word-for-word) and dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought) translation techniques, the ABC aims to preserve the nuances and richness of the original languages while ensuring readability and clarity for modern readers.

The ABC also incorporates extensive cross-references and study aids to enhance the reader’s understanding of the biblical text. These tools include footnotes that provide historical and cultural context, as well as explanations of difficult or ambiguous passages. This approach helps readers to grasp the deeper meanings of the scriptures and to see how different parts of the Bible interconnect. The inclusion of these study aids makes the ABC particularly useful for those who are new to the Bible, as well as for more experienced readers who are looking to deepen their understanding of the text.

Despite its strengths, the Apostles’ Bible Complete has faced some criticisms. Some readers feel that the translation could benefit from further refinement in certain passages, as the balance between formal and dynamic equivalence can sometimes lead to inconsistencies in style and tone. Others have noted that while the study aids are helpful, they can occasionally overwhelm the main text, making it difficult to focus on the scripture itself. Nonetheless, the ABC remains a valuable and respected translation, appreciated for its commitment to accuracy, clarity, and accessibility, and for its ability to bring the ancient words of the Bible to life for contemporary readers.
